How can my organization get involved?
All Partners are invited and encouraged to follow the methodology presented at the 18+ Strategy Meeting, to “Enhance _, Expand (growth), Extend (new programs)_ approach” to current and new 18+ programs. This is best achieved with at least two Partners working bilaterally to in order to best meet market needs as well as those of your organizations.

You can start by reading the report and reading the last update on the 18+ Initiative which includes conclusions and next steps from the 18+ Strategy Meeting held in May 2006.

Framework:

  • Do some basic research to learn what competitors are doing (in both hosting and sending) and what customers are seeking in your market.
  • When negotiating keep in mind the need to be flexible regarding dates, prices, program combinations, travel, insurance and keep transfer prices low.
  • Work internally with staff and volunteers to create champions for 18+ programs and to keep indirect costs low.
  • Remember that 18+ customers are independent, smart consumers. They will require a streamlined, efficient and flexible admissions process from inquiry to orientation to participation.
  • Bilateral agreements should be transparent and disclosed to the network in a timely manner.

Incentives:

  • Keep Lisa Cohen, Norman Duarte or Jairo Riveros, at AFS International informed of your plans for new, enhanced or expanded 18+ Programs in order to make the most of opportunities for support.
  • Working with the Partner Development and Financial workgroups, AFS International will be developing incentives for growth in this program.
