11/8/2005 - AFS Japan: New Emphasis on Corporate Fundraising
AFS Japan has recently developed a corporate fundraising brochure to share its vision with companies and to obtain their support as a way to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibility goals. In the brochure, we propose five ways in which they can support AFS.
1. Straight Donation
2. Annual Straight Donation
3. Scholarship
4. Matching Gift
5. Volunteering / hosting students, etc.
We have also included messages from famous returnees and a third person.
We have found through experience that providing scholarships are a preferred choice for corporations as they can gain visibility by attaching their corporate identity to the program. Some of our recent achievement in corporate fundraising include:
- A software company, jointly with an NGO, has started supporting an AFS student from Sri Lanka.
- An insurance company has started assisting children of its agents sent on AFS program.
- A life-insurance company decided to give 12 full scholarships for AFS students to the U.S. every year.
- A software training and testing firm, established and led by an AFS returnee, decided on a scholarship program to support sending 4 AFS students every year for five years from 2006.
A real estate company made a straight donation of Ten Million Yen (almost US$ 100,000). The company is in the process of establishing a foundation to support intercultural education programs including AFS. Our brand power and activity history in Japan have contributed to their decision making.
A nation-wide chemical firm considering encouraging employee families to volunteer in hosting AFS students.
We are also planning to hold “a company visit campaign” among local chapters aiming to reach out to the companies that are locally based. We’re hoping that by using this brochure, we can approach many more corporations in quest of better CSR activities.
